What is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist?
Pediatric ophthalmologists are medical and surgical doctors (Eye M.D.s) who specialize in eye problems commonly occuring in children. These same conditions also can occur in adults. Therefore our practice caters to both children and adults. Because the brain develops normal vision between birth through about age 9 years, problems that may cause any difference between the eyes can permanently affect vision. There are many things that can cause this problem and the earlier they are diagnosed and treated the higher the chance normal vision can be obtained and maintained. Screening for and treatment of these conditions can start as early as birth as needed. A common misconception is that a child must be able to read or identify pictures to have an eye exam. This is not true. Many aspects of an exam do not require the patient to communicate so evaluation should not be delayed if any concerns exist. Another misconception iis that we see only children. That is also not true. Many adults have new or old similar problems which we are trained to treat.
.Just as you treat every person with healthy medical visits and screenings, the same should be true for the eyes.
All ophthalmologists have training in children’s eye problems, but the pediatric ophthalmologist has had additional training and practice in examining children and caring for their eye problems. If your primary care doctor suggests that your child have his or her eyes checked, a pediatric ophthalmologist will have the greatest knowledge of the possible conditions and the greatest experience in examining children effectively.
